D-Light Your Everyday Health With Vitamin D3!

Vitamin D3 also known as ‘The Sunshine Vitamin’ is crucial for overall wellbeing of our health. It is unique as it is made in the skin from exposure to sunlight.

As the number of people with Vitamin D deficiency continues to increase, the importance of this hormone in overall health and prevention of chronic diseases is at the forefront of research.

Globally, the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency is high. Approximately 1 billion people, consisting of all ethnicities and age groups, have low vitamin D levels worldwide.

Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) is the predominant form of vitamin D. Cholecalciferol is needed by the body for healthy bones, muscles, nerves, and to support the immune system. A significant fraction of vitamin D is produced endogenously in the skin from dehydrocholesterol by the action of UV light.

Vitamin D is shown to modulate both the innate and adaptive immune responses of the body. Nearly 54 genes shown to be involved in immunomodulatory function in our body are strongly modulated by Vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to an increased susceptibility to respiratory infections as well as viral infections like influenza and dengue.

Vitamin D controls calcium absorption in the small intestine and works with parathyroid hormone to mediate skeletal mineralization and maintain calcium homeostasis in the blood stream.

Dietary supplements can contain both vitamin D2 or vitamin D3. Ergocalciferol, or vitamin D2, is present in plants and some fish. Cholecalciferol, or vitamin D3, is synthesized in by sun exposure and through consumption of oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines.

Below are some of the Vitamin D-rich food to include in diet:

  1. Fortified dairy products: Milk, yogurt, buttermilk, and cheddar are good sources of Vitamin D.
  2. Fortified breakfast cereals and juices such as orange juice
  3. Egg Yolk: Egg yolk is highly rich in Vitamin D.
  4. Mushrooms: Low-fat, high-nutrient food provides a good amount of Vitamin D
  5. Oily Fish: Such as salmon, sardines, herring, and mackerel
